President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday formally accorded degree awarding status to the Pakistan Institute of Fashion Design (PIFD) at a special ceremony held here at the Aiwan-e-Sadr. The signing ceremony was attended among others by Minister for Commerce Makhdoom Amin Fahim, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan, Secretary General M. Salman Faruqui, Spokesperson to the President Farhatullah Babar, Principal PIFD Ms. Hina Tayyaba, former principals and students, faculty, members of executive committee of the Institute of Fashion Design besides other senior officials.
The Pakistan Institute of Fashion Design Bill, 2011 was passed by National assembly on November 5, 2010 and senate on April 6, 2011. It became a law on Friday after the President formally gave his assent to it. The Institute with main its campus in Lahore will grant degrees in six major disciplines including textile design, furniture design, gems and jewelry design, leather accessories and footwear design and fashion designing. Six more constituent colleges of the institute are being planned to be set up at Hala, Quetta, Peshawar, Islamabad, Multan and Faisalabad. – App
