MUMBAI: The Maharashtra government has invited bids to launch a high-tech medical service system in the state, sources said. The system will boost a call center and 937 ambulances to cater to the medical needs of the rural and urban population.

The state government on Sunday invited bids to launch a “Maharashtra Emergency Medical Services (MEMS) with a fleet of 937 life support ambulances on turnkey basis to develop and operate emergency response service/ambulance service for providing reliable, trustworthy and quality emergency response ambulance service.”

According to the information in the tender, the bids can be submitted till Sept. 15 and pre-bid meeting will be held on Aug. 23. A Public Health Department official said that the MEMS would cover major cities and parts of rural Maharashtra. “We are seeking to procure over 900 ambulances,” he said.

A minister said that the MEMS have been initiated through the National Rural Health Mission. Of the 937 ambulances, the state government intends to purchase 235 advanced life support ambulances and 702 basic life support ambulances. The process to procure the ambulances will be done in three phases – 374 ambulances in the first phase, 373 in the second and 190 in the third. Many victims of the terror attack last month were rushed to hospitals in taxis, trucks and private vehicles. – Arabnews
